Mohawk Paper Mills, Inc., Cohoes, NY, has received Forest Stewardship Council certification for two of its recycled paper lines: Mohawk Color Copy 100% Recycled and new Options 100% Recycled. Mohawk says it is the only mill to carry FSC certification on a 100% post-consumer recycled paper grade. www.mohawkpaper.com.


Cascades Inc. sold two wood-fiber panel divisions for an undisclosed amount. Materiaux Cascades and Convermat are in Louiseville, QC. www.cascades.com.

On May 11, 2004, Doman Industries Ltd. gained legal permission to sell its Port Alice, BC, pulp mill to Port Alice Specialty Cellulose Inc., a subsidiary of LaPointe Partners, Inc., a Wisconsin-based firm specializing in turning around pulp and paper operations. LaPointe paid $1 for substantially all the assets of the mill, including $2.73 million of adjusted working capital and the assumption of outstanding obligations including employee and pension liabilities. Doman continues under creditor protection and still owns a pulp mill at Squamish, BC. www.westernpulp.bc.ca.


The Swedish and Norwegian pulp and paper research institutes – STFI-Packforsk, Stockholm and Örnsköldsvik, and PFI, Trondheim, respectively – have merged. Described in a press release as a “Scandinavian super institute”, the “internationally competitive research body” will based in both countries and offer R&D services covering pulp and paper techniques, packaging and printing. PFI AS is owned 95% by STFI-Packforsk and 5% by Norske Skogindustrier ASA, Borregaard Industries Ltd., M. Peterson & Søn AS, Södra Cell Tofte AS and the PFI Foundation. PFI AS is strong in mechanical pulp and fibre characterization, paper mechanics, new ”green” materials, microbiology and adsorption. PFI AS co-operates closely with the Norwegian Technical University, NTNU. STFI-Packforsk has similar co-operation with KTH in Stockholm and other Swedish universities. www.stfi.se.


For the second year in a row SP Newsprint, Dublin, GA, has set the record as the world’s most productive newsprint machine by producing 1107 kg/cm/day during 2003. Metso Paper recognized SP Newsprint’s accomplishment at the Metso Technology Seminar held in Atlanta during Paper Summit 2004 in May. Last year, the machine produced 1069.1 kg/cm/day. PM2, a Valmet machine originally installed in 1988, has been kept efficient through a program of rebuilds and improvements. www.metsopaper.com.


Andreas Scheurell, currently regional head of the paper business unit of Bayer Chemicals Corp. USA succeeded Dr. Thomas Eizenhöfer on June 1 as head of the paper business unit of Bayer Chemicals AG which, as part of the restructuring of the Bayer Group, will be part of the new chemical company LANXESS. www.bayerchemicals.com.
