Bearing protection solves 10-year problem at K.T.G.
The former Pope & Talbot pulp mill
in Nanaimo, BC, is reported to have
re-started operations under new management
The new owner is Nanaimo Forest
Products which, according to the
Vancouver Sun, is composed of a
group of the mill's workers and managers, Pioneer Log Homes of
Williams Lake, the family-owned
Sampson Group of Vancouver and Totzauer Holdings, a construction
company based in the Fraser Valley.
They paid about $C13.2 million for
the operation. The worker-owners
invested $25,000 each for an ownership stake - $10,000 down and
$15,000 over the next three years.
The workers have two members on
the eight-member board.
A union agreement specifies there
will be no lockouts or work stoppages
for 11 years. The mill already has a
five-year contract for 100% of its pulp product. Markets include Asia,
Europe and some to the US. Fiber is available through an agreement with
Western Forest Products.
The mill is starting only one of its
three lines now. A second is scheduled to start up early in 2009.
Products include bleached, semibleached and unbleached softwood
market pulp. Product diversification
is on the agenda as is the production
of alternative energy. PI
