Lenox camera system monitors BLRB smelt-bed in real time

Trevose, PA-based Lenox Instrument Company, Inc. says its air-cooled, high-temperature FireSightñ smeltbed camera system provides real-time, high-resolution color video images from inside a black liquor recovery boiler. Viewing the images from the plantÕs control room, operators can monitor and control the recovery boiler smelt bed for growth, shape and optimal lower furnace operation, helping to maximize the over-all boiler performance and safety.

Designed to be installed through a small opening of only 2-3/8 in. (61mm), the high-resolution camera and lens tube is specially designed to survive in environments up to 3,000°F (1649°C). A light volume control feature, a Lenox exclusive, allows the operator easy adjustment of the amount of light transmitted to the camera, eliminating the bloom common with other systems and ensuring high image clarity.

The FireSight system also features quartz optics that withstand temperatures up to 1,200°F (649°C) higher than the glass lenses used in other systems. A compressed air cooling system provides reliable performance while using considerably less compressed air than competing systems. A wall box mounting assembly provides the protective housing for the system and serves as the primary coolant shroud.

FireSight smelt-bed cameras can be supplied with a wide variety of directions and fields of view to match specific requirements. Infrared thermal imaging models are also available for accurate temperature measurement.

Optional FireSight accessories include an automatic retraction system that pulls the camera from inside the boiler should a loss of cooling occur, preventing possible over-temperature damage to the camera lens assembly; a high-efficiency compressed air filter system for removing oil, water and particulates providing clean air to the system to ensure trouble-free performance and clear viewing of the smelt bed.

The air filter system uses a selfÐpurging coalescing filter and has a pressure differential switch, which may be wired to an alarm to warn when itÕs time to change the filter elements. High-resolution LCD monitors and a digital video recorder are also available.

Each Lenox FireSight smelt-bed imaging system is designed, manufactured in the USA and serviced in-house by Lenox Instrument, and is backed by a two-year warranty.
