UPM Miramichi mill site to be recycled

Helsinki-based UPM-Kymmene said it sold its paper and groundwood pulp mills in Miramichi, NB, to Umoe Solar a subsidiary of Norwaybased Umoe AS.

Umoe will not make paper there but is said to be planning to turn the mill into a solar panel manufacturing site. The sale included two sawmills and woodlands operations. No price was disclosed although UPM said it would record income of about 20-million Euros on the sale as a special item in the first quarter of 2009.

UPM made 450 000 tonnes/year of LWC magazine paper before the mill was shut last year.

According to a report in The Telegraph- Journal, published in Fredericton, NB, Umoe plans to produce 5000 tonnes/year of super pure silicone for use in photovoltaic cells. The company already produces ethanol from sugar cane in Brazil.
