NEWS BRIEFS Brazil-based Stora Enso Arapoti will sell some of its assets to pulp maker Arauco, which has operations in Brazil, Chile, Argentina and Uruguay. Stora is selling 100% of the Arapoti sawmill, 80% of the shares of the forest plantations holding company and 20% of the shares of the 205,000- tonnes/year LWC mill. Further joint ventures may result between the two companies, says Stora Enso. www.storaenso.com. Fraser Papers has sold its remaining 22% interest in Acadian Timber Income Fund for $C38.3 million to Brookfield Asset Management Inc. of Toronto, ON. Brookfield is the principal shareholder in Fraser Papers which will use the proceeds to pay off debt. www.fraserpapers.com. Sonoco Recycling is the new name for Sonoco's recovered paper operations. It combines the company's established recycling capabilities with services such as waste-management consulting. www.sonoco.com. A report from Montevideo says that Portugalbased Portucel is interested in building a $1- billion pulp and paper mill in eastern Uruguay. The country has about 800,000 hectares of plantations of eucalyptus (80%) and the rest coniferous. The new Botnia Orion mill at Fray Bentos is now starting up, Spain's ENCE is building a mill due for startup in 2009/2010 and Stora Enso is said to be planning a mill in central Uruguay. An Argentine company, Celulosa Argentina is also reported to be planning a $1-billion, 1- million-ton/year pulp mill in Uruguay. Celulosa Argentina has bought a 97% interest in Uruguay's largest paper company, Fabrica Nacional de Papel. Wynnchurch Capital, a Chicago-based private equity firm, has purchased a majority interest in Webex, Inc., Neenah, WI. BOC Gases and Linde Gas in North America have rebranded as Linde. Linde AG bought The BOC Group, PLC, in September 2006 to form The Linde Group consisting of over 100 companies in 70 countries. Linde offers papermakers CO2-based solutions to improve paper quality. Chemical pulp producers are offered patented washing technology. Linde says it has the largest CO2 supply network in the US. A new 500-ton rail storage depot in Attleboro, MA, supplies northern New England. A 600-ton/day plant will start operating in Fulton, NY, in early 2008 to supply New England and Mid-Atlantic states. www.linde.com. Temple-Inland Inc. has completed the spin-off of its operations into three separate companies. Temple-Inland Inc. manufactures corrugated packaging and building products. It has five linerboard mills and a corrugated medium mill producing 3.5 million tons/y of containerboard. Its 64 converting plants produce 3.6 million tons/y of corrugated packaging. The other companies are Guaranty Financial Group Inc. handling banking, insurance and treasury corporate and Forestar Real Estate Group Inc. which covers real estate and natural resources. www.templeinland.com. Smurfit-Stone Container Corporation's Uncasville, CT, containerboard mill has earned the Safety and Health Recognition Program (SHARP) award, the highest certification given to small employers for workplace safety and health. The mill is one of nine Connecticut companies to receive the award from the Connecticut Department of Labor's Division of Occupational Safety and Health Administration (CONN-OSHA) and the US Department of Labor. The designation allows Smurfit-Stone exemption from OSHA's general schedule inspection list during the two-year award period. The mill employs 100 people. www.smurfit-stone.com.
