Amongst new or improved paper grades announced recently are several from Xerox, Stora Enso and Appleton.

Xerox has launched its High Yield Business Paper™ made using mechanical pulp and designed for use with digital printers.

The paper was developed at the Xerox Media and Compatibles Technology Center, Webster, NY, and is a 45-lb text grade (17.7-lb bond/67 gsm). It offers 10% more sheets per pound yet performs like 50-lb text (20- lb bond/75 gsm) made using chemical pulp as the furnish, which is the most  widely used type of paper used for digital printing. The opacity is equal to that of traditional 60-lb text (24-lb bond/90 gsm); brightness is 84. The product is offered in 10-ream (10 x 500 sheets) cartons of 8? x 11 sheets or 40- and 50- in.-diameter rolls. www.xerox.com.

Stora Enso has added Futura Laser® Dull in 80-lb and 100-lb text and cover in the 20.5 x 14.3-in. size designed for printing efficiency for Xerox iGen3™ production laser equipment and digital offset printers. The alkaline, archival-quality paper is engineered for maximum performance on dry- and liquid-toner technologies. Futura Laser’s ultra-stable formation and optimized surface mean better curl resistance, faster paper-tray feeding and higher page/minute speeds, says Stora Enso. www.storaenso.com.

Appleton Coated LLC has broadened its line of FSC-certified Utopia products to include: Utopia Premium in gloss and silk; Utopia One X (U1X) in gloss, silk and matte with 97 brightness; Utopia One (U1) soft blue white in gloss, silk and matte; Utopia Two (U2) sheets and digital sheets blue white in gloss, dull, matte and ivory matte; Utopia Two Xtra Green (U2:XG).

U1X, U1 and U2 contain a minimum 10% post-consumer recycled fiber. U2:XG contains 30% recycled fiber and is manufactured with renewable electrical energy such as wind, hydro or biogas.

Wausau Paper expanded three product groups in its release liner, food service and protective packaging product lines. The ExperTec® glassine and release liner application include film label, casting and graphics. ExperTec® Ultra now provides a recyclable alternative to petroleum/poly-based liners. A new EcoSelect™ product platform gives users an economic, environmentally preferable choice in grease-resistant and grease-proof papers.
