Marathon Pulp Inc. in Northwestern Ontario said in March it would declare bankruptcy and forego an extended 30-day protection period from creditors. The joint venture between publicly-traded Tembec and privately-owned Kruger, both based in Montreal, filed for bankruptcy protection on Feb. 13 and owes $C50.4 million. Price water house Coopers is now the trustee and will try to find a new buyer for the operation. The mill employed about 240 people and produced about 550 tonnes/day of NBSK pulp. Tembec had stopped proportionately consolidating the financial results of Marathon in its reports. Tembec said that move would result in a one-time gain of $3 million in the March 2009 quarter. During the 12-month period ended December 27, 2008, the joint venture had increased Tembec's reported sales by $C61 million and generated EBITDA of $2 million. www.tembec.com.
