AbitibiBowater offers press-room waste management

AbitibiBowater Recycling Europe said it would showcase a total waste management solution for the print and publishing sector at this year's Northprint meeting in Harrogate, Yorkshire in April.

The company collects and re-processes thousands of tonnes of waste from UK press rooms that serve as the feedstock for its Bridgewater newsprint mill in Ellesmere Port, Cheshire. This "closed loop" sees AbitibiBowater supplying national and regional newspapers with 100% recycled newsprint, while providing a tailored waste management system that also assists many of them with the recovery of other press room recyclables, generating revenue streams from materials that would otherwise be treated as waste.

The company finances press room compactors, conveyors, air systems and other waste handling equipment, providing on-site labor, as well as account management and quarterly service and price reviews.

"Through long-term relationships with many of the UK's leading printing companies, as well as the need to satisfy the fiber procurement requirements of our Bridgewater mill and others, we are able to guarantee the off-take of their recovered paper, in some cases for as long as 10 years," says Rick Waterson, commercial and marketing manager, AbitibiBowater Recycling Europe.

The company was the first to introduce paper banks in the UK in 1986. Today, it operates one of the largest single company paper bank programs in Europe, collecting over 100 000 tonnes a year from some 5,500 banks on behalf of more than 100 local authorities throughout the UK. It also collects ONP and OMG from over two million UK homes for recycling at Bridgewater.
